The County Legislature is the policy-making and appropriating body of County Government. The legislaturehas the power tolevy taxes, adopt the County budget, make appropriations, and adopt local laws. It is comprised of 9 Legislators across the county representing approximately 5,500 people each. The Chair of the Legislature is elected by the Legislature annually and presides over the day to day operations of the county.
The official monthly meeting of the Legislature is the Tuesday of the first full week of the month and is held at the Ronald E. Dougherty Office Building, 56 Main Street, Owego, NY. The Legislature also meets twice a month for work session meetings and each Legislator chairs a Standing Committee that meets once a month. Additional Special Sessions may be called from time to time when pressing matters cannot wait for the next scheduled monthly meeting. Tioga County is divided into seven legislative districts. Two of those districts, 4 and 7, elect two legislators. The boundaries and configuration of the districts are updated after each decennial census. This general map shows the overview of all 7 districts. Please note that while this map is accurate it is not suitable for precise location of district boundaries due to its small size.
